September 21st – October 1st, 2015.
Our sixth trip to San Francisco – it took awhile but we made it back to the City by the Bay. This is the hot summer of 2015, a record setting one. At the time of writing meteorologists predict that this will be the hottest year on the planet ever and SF is no exception. Add to that years of drought and you have the perfect recipe for forest fires. Two terrible fires are raging as we visit. The Valley Fire (Napa County) and the Tassajara (Carmel Valley).
We start our trip in San Francisco for 3 nights, followed by 3 in Monterey, 2 in Napa, and we finish with a last 2 in SF. In San Francisco we stayed at the modest but extremely well located Cow Hollow Suites on Lombard between Fillmore and Steiner. Rates are fair, parking is free, and you’re right off the Chestnut street shops and restaurants. Not too far away is the Palace of Fine Arts (below).
As usual, a trip to the zoo is mandatory. Highlight was the big cats, thankfully without any idiot dentists around. We also did the California Academy of Sciences but it was a disappointment. Much more fun to watch the Meerkats at the zoo although we only saw a pair, what happened to the others is a mystery.
